Alabama Men’s Golf in Seventh After Opening Round of Puerto Rico Classic

Senior Lee Hodges and junior Davis Riley both in top five following day one
RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – Senior Lee Hodges is in second overall and junior Davis Riley is in third after the opening round of the Puerto Rico Classic on Sunday afternoon at the Rio Mar Country Club. As a team, the No. 1-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide will enter Monday's second round in seventh place with a team total of 2-over par 286.
Hodges led the way for the Tide on the par 71, 6,716-yard Ocean Course, as he recorded a bogey-free round of 4-under par 67 to end the day in second overall. The Ardmore, Tenn., native recorded a pair of birdies to go along with an eagle on the 490-yard par 5 fifth hole to finish the day five strokes back of clubhouse leader Stephen Franken of North Carolina State, who shot a tournament record of 9-under 62.
Meanwhile, Riley, who begins the season rated No. 1 in Golfstat.com's player rankings, is one stroke back of Hodges after finishing the day with a 3-under par 68. The Hattiesburg, Miss., native collected seven birdies to go with four bogeys during Sunday's opening round of play.
Freshman Wilson Furr, playing in his second collegiate event, finished the round at 4-over par 75 and is in a tie for 55th, while senior Steven Setterstrom is in a tie for 58th with a 5-over 76. Senior Jonathan Hardee rounds out the Tide's starting five in 69th position with a 79.
In addition to the Tide's starting five, Alabama sophomore Josh Sedeno and freshman Davis Shore are two of 23 total players who are competing as individuals in the event, playing on the par 72, 6,902-yard River Course. Sedeno finished the day in eighth among the individual players with a 2-over par 74, while Shore is in a tie for ninth at 3-over 75.
Defending national champion and No. 8-ranked Oklahoma leads the 15-team field after carding a 10-under 274. Seventh-ranked Georgia Tech and No. 35 North Carolina State are tied for second after both teams carded an 8-under 276. Tournament host Purdue is in fourth at 7-under 277, while No. 16 Clemson and East Carolina are tied for fifth with an even par 284.
The Crimson Tide will tee off its second round with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. CT. Alabama will be paired alongside Georgia and Middle Tennessee State. Live scoring can be found throughout the tournament on Golfstat.com.
