Friday’s meet marks Alabama’s fifth top-10 opponent of the season and seventh top-20 foe
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The No. 7-ranked Alabama gymnastics team faces off against its fifth top-10 opponent of the season this Friday when No. 9 Kentucky comes to Coleman Coliseum for a 7:30 p.m. meet.
Friday marks Alabama's seventh meet of the season and sixth-consecutive Southeastern Conference meet. It is Kentucky's seventh meet of the season, fourth road meet and sixth-straight SEC contest.
Alabama earned a season-best 197.075 on the road at Florida last weekend while Kentucky posted a season-best 196.950 in its road win at Arkansas in the Wildcats' second meet of the season.
"Every week we are getting better," UA head coach Dana Duckworth said. "Every week we have different people doing different things and making different adjustments. What we talk about all the time is where is your one percent. How can you get one percent better today and how can you get one percent better tomorrow."
The Crimson Tide continues to be led by seniors Nickie Guerrero and Kiana Winston. Guerrero posted a season-high 9.95 to win the balance beam twice this season, both on the road, against LSU and Florida. Winston has been on fire to start her final season, scoring 9.9 or better in 10 of her first 19 routines this season and earning eight individual event titles.
The two teams last met at the 2017 SEC Championships, where Alabama took third with a 197.400, while Kentucky was fifth after scoring a 196.625.
The Tide is welcoming back more than 80 gymnastics alumni this weekend, including the 1988 team, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary of winning the program's first SEC and NCAA Gymnastics Championships.
Alabama will also be hosting its Bama Salute night, with all military and first responders receiving free admission with their ID. The Crimson Tide will also be giving away 1,000 light up wands. In honor of Alabama's weekend of champions, a limited edition poster featuring the 1988 team as well as all of the Tide's individual NCAA champions will be given away, with nearly a dozen past NCAA champions on hand from 6:15 to 6:45 p.m. to sign autographs.
Tickets for Friday's meet against the Wildcats are available through the Alabama Ticket Office (205.348.2262) located in the lobby of Coleman Coliseum and online at RollTide.com.
