Alabama Swimming & Diving Freshman Crushes School Record at the Georgia Tech Invitational

Rookie distance ace Kensey McMahon shaves four seconds off the Alabama school record, becoming the first UA woman under 16 minutes in the mile
ATLANTA – Alabama swimming and diving rookie Kensey McMahon opened the final night of the Georgia Tech Invitational in a big way, shattering the school record in the 1,650 freestyle on the way to the win at the McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta, Ga. Saturday.
The longest race of the meet came down to a fraction of a second as McMahon posted a 15:59.46 to edge Florida's Leah Braswell by .01. With the swim, the freshman distance ace became the first UA woman under 16 minutes in the mile.
While McMahon won the longest race, the Tide men won the shortest race of the night when senior Robert Howard dipped under 42 seconds in the 100 freestyle, to clock a 41.94 for the victory. He outraced the field by more than half a second. With that time, Howard is now ranked No. 1 nationally in the 50 and 100 freestyles.
Howard then closed the meet with a blistering 41.09 relay split to anchor the Tide's 400 freestyle relay to a win. The senior joined with junior Zane Waddell, senior Laurent Bams and sophomore Sam DiSette to stop the clock at 2:50.41.
Earlier in the evening senior Justine Macfarlane went 2:10.97 in the 200 breaststroke to take third place. Freshman Rhyan White turned in a 1:54.24 in the prelims of the women's 200 backstroke to rank second all-time at UA before finishing fourth in finals with a 1:55.21.
Fellow rookie Kalia Antoniou led off the Tide's 400 freestyle relay with a career-best 49.13, which ranks her fifth all-time at Alabama. She combined with sophomores Leonie Kullmann, junior Allie Surrency and sophomore Flora Molnar to take third place with a 3:17.57.
