The Crimson Tide added Womack and Rice officially on Wednesday
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama women's basketball team signed two players to its 2019 class during the early period, head coach Kristy Curry announced on Wednesday. The Crimson Tide's newest additions to the program includes a pair of first team all-state performers in guards Mystique Womack (Marlin, Texas) and Destiny Rice (Shreveport, La.).
Mystique Womack
Womack is a 5-8 guard from Marlin, Texas, who filled up the stat sheet her junior season at Marlin High School in 2017-18, averaging 28 points, six rebounds, five assists and five steals while leading the Lady Bulldogs to a 2018 3A State Championship game. Under the direction of head coach Lawrence Gullette, Womack, a MaxPrep National Player of the Week recipient, has earned multiple honors including, Super CenTex Player of the Year, First Team All-State, All-State Tournament Team, All-Region and District Most Valuable Player in 2018.
Womack is rated 30th overall in her position according to espnW HoopGurlz and was a member of the Hoop Queens Elite AAU team, which was under the direction of Brian Adams.
"Mystique is an athletic guard who can score at the rim, mid-range and shoot the deep ball," stated Curry. "She has the ability to really get up and guard the ball and disrupt passing lanes defensively. Her best basketball is ahead of her and she will be in a great position to continue to develop in our system."
What they're saying about Womack
"An elusive 1-on-1 creator that has only touched the surface of her potential. Capable of scoring in bunches, Womack is best suited for the up-tempo game." - Dan Olson, Collegiate Girls Basketball Report/espnW HoopGurlz
"Womack is a SLEEPER. Super quick and pushes tempo. She is a 3-level scorer. She affects both sides of the ball with her high motor and energy. Scorer on offense and defensive disruptor." - Bret McCormick, All-Star Girls Report
Destiny Rice
Rice, who is ranked 79th overall and 20th in her position in the espnW HoopGurlz Top 100, is a 5-9 guard from North Caddo Magnet High School. During her impressive junior campaign, Rice dominated by averaging a double-double with 26 points and 11 rebounds per contest, to go along with five assists and five steals per game to lead the Lady Rebels to its second state championship in the last three seasons. The Shreveport, La. native, was named First Team All-State, First Team All-District and First Team All-City in 2018 while playing under long-time coach Ricky Evans and head coach Brian Shyne.
Rice played AAU for the Lady Flames Elite under Reshad Baker and Hoop Nation 365 coached by Shantel Hardison. Rice is a member of the Tennessee Starz Elite Mavericks and led her team to the 2018 MAYB National Championship under the late Gerald Hill.
"Destiny is a physical guard with a scorer's mentality," said Curry. "She has been well-coached on every level. Destiny will bring a winner's mindset to our program and provide depth in our backcourt. One of the things that has always impressed me the most is how much she loves to be in the gym working on her game."
What they're saying about Rice
"A physical combo-guard with the ability to score out to the arc but, most proficient off the dribble. Driving through contact is a strength of Rice." - Dan Olson, Collegiate Girls Basketball Report/espnW hoopgurlz
"Rice is a very athletic, tough, attacking guard. Finishes in traffic and gets to the free throw line. Elevates on the mid-range jumper with a scorer's mentality." - Bret McCormick, All-Star Girls Report
