Crimson Tide students from eight different programs combined to help finish off another Habitat for Humanity house in the Tuscaloosa community
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Student-athletes from a number of University of Alabama Athletics teams joined forces this past weekend to contribute to a Habitat for Humanity project put together by the Crimson Tide's Life Skills program.
Members of the Alabama gymnastics, baseball, rowing, soccer, women's basketball, men's tennis and men's and women's track and field/cross country teams took part in a total of four sessions over two days on Friday and Saturday.
"We've been helping out with the general project," men's tennis player Sam Fischer said. "We've got flooring, we've got staining and then we're kind of just finishing up with everything that's been going on here. Everybody's been having a good time. It's been fun being out here with other teams as well."
While everyone was working toward a common goal of helping finish a Habitat for Humanity house, there was still a competitive streak that was evident.
"This is a great opportunity for us to work together and work on our teamwork skills," senior gymnast Angelina Giancroce said. "It's kind of been a little bit of a competition between the two flooring rooms to see which was going to get done first, whose is going to be better."
Junior Jordan Lewis from women's basketball agreed, adding, "I feel like not everyone gets the opportunity to be in the shoes we're in. So anything that we can do to give back to the community and show that we're supporting not only our school, but the people around us and that come to watch us, is important."
That sense of community and giving back is a hallmark of Alabama Athletics and its Life Skills initiative.
"It feels amazing, just like winning a gold medal," men's track and field team junior Alize Ford said. "It can't get any better than this, helping somebody that actually needs it from the good of our heart."
The Habitat for Humanity weekend is the most recent part of a series designed to fulfill Alabama Life Skill's mission to provide opportunities for growth through personal development and service initiatives, empowering Crimson Tide student-athletes to be difference makers and people of positive influence as they pursue success at Alabama and beyond.
