The student-led initiative, in its 25th year in 2018, uses one of college athletics’ deepest rivalry to fight hunger in West Alabama
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The 25th annual Beat Auburn Beat Hunger (BABH) food drive got underway this week and Alabama Athletics and its Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) are working diligently to support the student-led initiative.
In addition to helping raise awareness of BABH and its benefits through its various social media accounts, Alabama Athletics will help collect nonperishable food items at four events during the six-week drive.
"SAAC is so excited to be a part of Beat Auburn Beat Hunger's 25th year of fighting hunger in West Alabama," UA rower and SAAC executive committee member Virginia Dodenhoff said. "The partnership between BABH and Alabama Athletics has grown so much over the years and we can't wait to see how much food we can collect and what a difference we can make as a campus community over the next few weeks."
The Tide will have donation barrels at its annual Halloween Extravaganza in its Indoor Practice Facility on Oct. 22 as well as at the Alabama-Ole Miss volleyball match on Oct. 28 in Foster Auditorium. The Crimson Tide basketball teams will have back-to-back collection drives in November. The men's team will have barrels in place for its Nov. 6 game against Southern, while the women will have the same on Nov. 7 against Southeastern Louisiana.
The volleyball and basketball events will include a ticket promotion tied to donations. Go to RollTide.com closer to the events for details.
BABH is an annual student-run event created by the Center for Service and Leadership (CSL) at the University of Alabama and the West Alabama Food Bank in 1994. The BABH food and fund drive unites University of Alabama students, faculty, staff, alumni, and Tuscaloosa and Northport community members to help fight hunger and poverty in West Alabama. In competition with Auburn University and the Food Bank of East Alabama, BABH challenges both institutions to collect the most food and monetary donations to help their local food bank.
This good-natured competition has made an impact that reaches far beyond the campuses where it began. Since its inception, Alabama and Auburn have combined to raise almost 6 million pounds of food for Alabamians in need.
