Alabama Women’s Tennis Shuts Out Belmont and UAB to Remain Undefeated

The Crimson Tide improves to 7-0, which is the best start since 2009
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama women's tennis team is off to its hottest start since 2009, after shutting out Belmont, 7-0, and UAB, 4-0, on Sunday at the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility.
The Crimson Tide (7-0) remains undefeated after blanking its fifth opponent of the season.
"Overall, I was very pleased with our match Friday evening at Central Florida, which catapulted our confidence to the matches today," head coach Jenny Mainz said. "All the girls are playing with more confidence and we are getting better. It's a long season and we need these matches to get better, get some wins and knock some rust off. This weekend was good for our team because it was a test. We knew it was going to be a hard weekend, but the girls are troopers. I am proud of the way the team is competing and we will keep getting better."
In the morning match against Belmont (0-5), Alabama took the early 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. Sophomore Kimberley Gintrand and freshman Kylie Moulin cruised past Mical Johnson and Sarah Brackin, 6-1, on court three, while junior Andie Daniell and sophomore Ann Selim topped Drew Hawkins and Erin Allen, 6-3, on court one.
In singles, the Crimson Tide won all six singles matches to shutout Belmont ,7-0. Sophomore Luca Fabian defeated Allen, 6-0, 6-0, while sophomore Alba Cortina-Pou handled Sarah Brackin, 6-1, 6-1. On court one, No. 106 Daniell topped Maria Plaksina, 6-3, while senior Smith Hinton rolled past Hawkins, 6-3, 6-1, on court two. Furthermore, sophomore Jacqueline Pelletier downed Terra Sheldon, 6-2, 6-2, and Gintrand powered past Sarah Beth Crowe, 6-2, 6-2, for the win.
In the night cap against UAB (2-2), Alabama jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to two great performances in doubles play. Hinton and Pelletier took down Hana Sisirak and Jana Hecking, 6-1, while Daniell and Selim defeated Marlene Herrmann and Sonia Grzywocz, 6-2.
In singles play, the Crimson Tide captured three matches to defeat the Blazers for the 22nd time in program history. Hinton cruised past Herrmann, 6-1, 6-2, while No. 106 Daniell took down Alex Shchipakina, 6-2, 6-0. Lastly, Selim moved past Jana Hecking in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, to seal the deal.
Up next, the Crimson Tide will host another pair of matches on Saturday, Feb. 3. Alabama is set to face Chattanooga at 10 a.m. CT and will compete against Alabama A&M at 4 p.m. CT at the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility.
