TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama men's tennis team will face its toughest challenge of the 2018 season when it hosts Virginia Tech at 6 p.m. on Friday and Penn State at 1 p.m. on Sunday inside the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility.
The Crimson Tide has started the season by winning its first six matches which is the best start by the program since the 2008 season when the Tide started the year 7-0.
In its six matches this season, Alabama has only conceded two singles points, compiling a 25-2 singles record, while going 15-1 in doubles matches.
Sophomore Edson Ortiz leads the team with a 5-0 singles record, while sophomores Thibault Cancel, Alexey Nesterov and freshman Grant Stuckey hold a perfect 4-0 mark to begin the season. The freshmen duo of Sam Fischer and Stuckey are tops on the squad with a 4-0 mark in doubles play, while junior Mazen Osama and Ortiz are 3-0 in the No. 1 doubles spot.
Virginia Tech comes into Friday's match with a 2-0 record, along with some of the best players in the country. The Hokies have three singles players who rank in the Top 100 of the latest ITA rankings, including No. 68 Mitch Harper, No. 80 Jason Kros and No. 97 Alexandre Ribeiro. The doubles pairing of Mitch Harper & Henrik Korsgaard rank as the No. 14 duo in the country. Meanwhile, Penn State won its first match of its 2018 campaign, defeating Colgate 7-0 on Jan. 20. The Nittany Lions also have one of the best singles players in the country, with Constant De La Bassetiere who comes in as No. 67 according to the ITA rankings.
