Alabama Women’s Tennis Defeats Western Kentucky and Lipscomb in Sunday Doubleheader

The Crimson Tide remain undefeated after four dual matches inside the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facilty
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama women's tennis team outlasted Western Kentucky, 4-3, and then dominated Lipscomb, 6-0, on Sunday at the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility. The Crimson Tide (4-0) remain undefeated in dual action after its pair of wins.
The Crimson Tide started off the day swinging, taking care of business on courts two and three to win the doubles point for the 1-0 lead. Senior Smith Hinton and sophomore Jacqueline Pelletier topped Cindy Oest and Natalie De Ugarte of Western Kentucky, 6-2, while junior Andie Daniell and freshman Kylie Moulin followed with a 6-2 win over Elpida Malamou and Violetta Shatalova.
In singles, sophomore Alba Cortina-Pou put the Tide up by two, after handling Oest of WKU, 6-3, 6-1, on court five, but the Lady Toppers rallied back into the match, winning on court three by defeating Moulin in straight sets.
On court one, No. 106 Daniell rolled past WKU's top singles player, Elpida Malamou, 7-6(5), 6-1, to regain the two-point lead, but Western Kentucky bounced back on court four, taking the match, 6-4, 6-2, over sophomore Ann Selim.
With the team score at 3-2, Pelletier answered the call and iced the match by defeating De Urgate, 6-4, 6-3, on court six.
In the afternoon session against Lipscomb, Moulin and sophomore Kimberley Gintrand fended off Thabile Tshatedi and Katerina Kandyba of Lipscomb, 6-3, while Daniell and Selim battled in a tight match to overcome Madeleine Brooks and Hannah Gamage, 7-6(4), for the doubles point.
In singles, Alabama swept the first three matches to snatch its second victory of the day. Sophomore Luca Fabian dominated Brooks, 6-0, 6-1, on court three, while Daniell cruised past Kateryna Popova, 6-3, 6-0, at the No. 1 position. For the win, Hinton handled Gamage on court two in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
Up next, Alabama will compete in its first road test against UCF on Friday, Jan. 26 at 5 p.m. CT, and will later host another pair of matches on Sunday, Jan. 28 against Belmont and UAB. Sunday's matches start at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
