The Crimson Tide won both matches, 4-0 and 5-0
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama men's tennis team started off the 2018 dual match season with a pair of wins over Jackson State on Saturday afternoon inside the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility. Both the men's and the women's programs played simultaneously for the first time in program history.
"It was a great day today, certainly everyone was ready to go," said head coach George Husack. "It's not often that you take six weeks off before your first competition and you have about eight days to train and prepare, so I thought that we did an exceptional job. We had a great crowd, along with last night's play day and playing alongside the women's team, which is unheard of in college tennis, it was a lot of fun."
The Crimson Tide (2-0) shutout the Tigers (0-2) in both matches with a score of, 4-0 and 5-0.
To begin the day, freshmen Sam Fischer and Grant Stuckey took care of business, defeating Prasad/Jacobs, 6-1, while junior Mazen Osama and sophomore Edson Ortiz edged Alawi/Gkontsaris, 6-4.
In singles play, Alabama was awarded one point by default with Jackson State not having a sixth player. Ortiz dominated in his opening singles match, defeating Fritz Jacobs, 6-0, 6-0, while sophomore Thibault Cancel gave the Crimson Tide the win after he pushed past Andre Alowi, 6-4, 6-3.
In the second match of the day, Alabama continued to impress, winning the doubles point after Fischer/Stuckey once again defeated Prasad/Jacobs, 6-0, while Osama/Cancel powered through Alawi/Gkontsaris, 6-3.
In singles action, Ortiz shutout another opponent in Joan Sanson, 6-0, 6-0, while Grant Stuckey earned his first singles win by defeating Vishu Prasad, 6-0, 6-0. Cancel picked up his second win of the day after defeating Stylianos Gkorsaris, 6-3, 6-2.
Alabama men's tennis will return to action on Monday, Jan. 15 with another doubleheader, when they take on UAB at 11 a.m. and then The Citadel at 4 p.m. CT inside the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility.
