Student-athletes from several different teams took part in different projects over the two-day build
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Student-Athletes from several different University of Alabama Athletics' teams came together this past weekend to take part in the first of two scheduled Habitat for Humanity projects the Crimson Tide's Life Skills program has scheduled for the fall.
The Tide's rowing, softball and men's and women's track and field teams were all represented on Friday and Saturday.
"I think it's really cool opportunity when a big team like rowing and a big team like track and field are able to get out here and interact with each other, when we might not have the chance to do that normally," sophomore rower Caroline Speith said.
Junior Shelby McEwen, from the men's track and field team agreed, adding, "Alabama Athletics and the Tuscaloosa community are very involved with each other, so it's a very good thing for us to be able to give back like this. As student-athletes, this kind of activity allows us to get to know each other, become friends and get involved with other sports because we're here as one family, as one school."
Giving back to the community is one of the hallmarks of Alabama Athletics and its Life Skills initiative.
"I think it's so important to have that relationship with the community and to be able to come out and give back to the community," junior rower Virginia Dodenhoff said. "No matter whether it's painting siding with Habitat for Humanity, or doing something else to help out, it's important for us to give back to this community."
The Habitat for Humanity weekend is the latest in a series of programming designed to fulfill Alabama Life Skill's mission to provide University of Alabama student-athletes opportunities for growth through personal development and service opportunities. The goal is to empower student-athletes to be difference-makers and people of positive influence as they pursue success at Alabama and beyond.
