The Tide outshot the Mocs 24-5 in the game
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – No. 19/RV Alabama women's soccer scored two early goals to cruise past Chattanooga, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Alabama Soccer Complex. The Crimson Tide (8-2, 0-1 SEC) shutout its fourth opponent of the season, only allowing five shots by the Mocs (2-5-2).
"I'm proud of the way the team played in terms of getting the result and getting out of the game without an injury," said coach Wes Hart. "To come out of a game injury-free and get the win is a huge success."
The Tide concludes its non-conference slate 8-1, which is the best non-conference record in program history since 2002.
Seniors Maddy Anzelc and Celia Jimenez Delgado netted Alabama's two goals, both unassisted, in the 10th and 12th minute respectively to give the Tide the advantage in the first half.
The Crimson Tide defense smothered the Mocs, allowing no shots in the first half and five total shots in the game, which tied the season-low set on Aug. 18 against Jacksonville State.
Alabama dominated the ball in the first half, earning five corners and three shots in the first 10 minutes of the contest.
In just her fourth career start and first of the season, Anzelc got the Tide on the board in the 10th minute after a deflected shot found its way to her before she snuck it past the goalkeeper to put Alabama up by one.
Two minutes later, Jimenez Delgado ripped a shot from 25 yards out that found the back of the net to extend the Tide's first half lead to 2-0.
The Tide's defense took control of the half holding Chattanooga to no shots, while the offense put up 14 shots in the first 45 minutes of play. The Crimson Tide also earned seven corners, to the Mocs one.
Alabama opened up the second half on the attack with two great chances from junior Abbie Boswell and freshman Nealy Martin that both rolled just past the net. In the 58th minute, the scoring opportunities continued for the Crimson Tide when freshman Taylor Morgan received a nice pass outside the box, and ripped it off the right post.
The Crimson Tide had another golden opportunity in the 76th minute when junior Emma Welch drove down the left wing and put one in the box for freshman Casey Wertz, who chipped the ball off the crossbar out of play.
Despite Alabama's numerous shot attempts in the second stanza, none fell through and the match ended with the Tide on top.
Alabama went on a shooting frenzy Sunday afternoon, recording 24 shots with seven on goal, and earned 10 corners.
In the net, Kat Stratton registered her fourth shutout of the season saving three shots on goal in 90:00 minutes.
Alabama returns to the pitch on Thursday evening for the Southeastern Conference home opener against LSU at 7:00 p.m. CT at the Alabama Soccer Complex.
