Morgan grabs the first conference weekly honor of her career
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After notching the game-winning goal that knocked off No. 6/4 Florida State on Sunday, freshman forward Taylor Morgan was tabbed SEC Freshman of the Week as announced by the Southeastern Conference office on Monday.
Morgan put the team on her back as the freshman from Westfield, N.J. notched the game-winning goal in the 55th minute to defeat the Seminoles, 1-0, in Tuscaloosa. The shutout victory, the first of the season, marks the first time Alabama has defeated Florida State in the series between the two programs and is the second win for the Tide over an ACC opponent in school history. It is also the first top-10 victory in program history and the first win over head coach Wes Hart's former school after serving as a Florida State assistant coach before joining the Tide.
With the game tied at a deadlock, freshman Casey Wertz charged down the wing and found Morgan open at the top of the box. Morgan rocketed the ball through the keeper's hands for the goal. Morgan had three shots on the day with two on goal and recorded her second career goal and her first game-winner at Alabama.
