TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Alabama Athletics' Life Skills program and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) closed the first week of classes with a mix of activities on Sunday, including the Crimson Kickoff Mixer for the Tide's freshmen and transfers, as well as a BBQ for all student-athletes.
"It's so hard when you come in and there are 550 student-athletes and you only get to meet your teammates," SAAC President and senior soccer player Maddy Anzelc said. "Doing something like this helps mix different teams and classes, guys and girls, giving everyone a chance to get to know each other."
Following the mixer, that included 'speed chat' icebreaker and other activities designed to help the Tide's more than 150 newcomers get to know each other, all student-athletes were invited to take part in a BBQ supper.
"It was a time to relax and hang out," freshman swimmer Jack Blake said. "We had the chance to talk to the upperclassmen who have been through this and they shared their experiences with us. It was a chance for us to talk to people we don't know."
Prior to the mixer and BBQ, members of SAAC took part in a retreat to get geared up for the coming year.
"When I was a freshman, the people who were in SAAC were the people I looked up to," junior baseball player Cobie Vance said. "They were the people I wanted to emulate. So hopefully I can be that to my freshmen and the freshmen from other teams."
