The Crimson Tide sent 11 players to various summer leagues this offseason
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Alabama baseball team saw 11 of its players take part in collegiate summer leagues in the past few months of the offseason. Below is a quick recap of their summers.
Chandler Avant | INF| Cotuit Kettleers (Cape Cod)
Senior infielder Chandler Avant rounded out the quartet of Tide players in the Cape, competing with Cotuit after a late arrival. Avant played in 36 games for the Kettleers, collecting 26 hits to go along three home runs, a total that tied him for fourth on the team. The Troy, Ala., native also placed fifth on his team in both runs (17) and walks (11), helping Cotuit clinch a playoff berth.
Chandler Taylor | OF | Brewster Whitecaps (Cape Cod)
Second Team All-SEC standout Chandler Taylor spent his summer with the Brewster Whitecaps, playing in 46 games. The left-handed slugger tied for the league lead with nine home runs on the season and also earned himself a spot in the Cape Cod League Home Run Derby. Taylor led his team in both runs (28) and stolen bases (8), while placing second in RBI (26) and walks (26), helping the Whitecaps take home the league championship to cap off the summer.
Davis Vainer | RHP | Hyannis Harbor Hawks (Cape Cod)
Davis Vainer, who is entering his sophomore season at the Capstone, appeared in 14 games for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks, making one start. The sophomore right-hander closed out the summer with 13 strikeouts across his 19.0 innings of work.
Cobie Vance | INF | Harwich Mariners (Cape Cod)
The Tide's everyday second baseman, Cobie Vance had a productive summer, representing Harwich in the Cape Cod All-Star Game. The junior second baseman led his team in hits, collecting 39 to go along with 21 RBI, a total that led the Mariners. Vance finished his summer campaign batting .279 with three doubles and a pair of triples across his 38 games played in Harwich.
Sam Finnerty | RHP/OF | Vermont Mountaineers (New England)
In a brief stint, Sam Finnerty competed with the Vermont Mountaineers. In his lone start of the summer, Finnerty tossed 5.0 innings of one-run baseball, with three hits and five strikeouts to earn the win.
Sonny Potter | LHP | Mystic Schooners (New England)
Sonny Potter was dominant throughout the summer for the Mystic Schooners, posting a 4-1 record across his eight starts. The sophomore lefty finished sixth in the league in ERA, sporting a 2.20 ERA across his 36.2 innings of work to go along with 32 strikeouts. Potter also tossed a no-hitter, which came on July 24 against the New Bedford Bay Sox, striking out four in the complete-game effort.
John Trousdale | INF | Mystic Schooners (New England)
John Trousdale closed out his summer batting .308 after totaling 44 hits, including eight doubles, a triple and a pair of home runs. The sophomore infielder led his team in RBI, registering 22 on the summer season, and earned himself a spot in the New England Baseball League All-Star Game, where he finished 2-for2 with a run scored.
Deacon Medders | RHP | Staunton Braves (Valley)
Tuscaloosa native Deacon Medders capped off a solid summer, appearing in seven games on the mound for Staunton, making six starts and finishing with a 2-1 record. The sophomore right-hander posted a 3.54 ERA in his 33.0 innings pitched, collecting 32 strikeouts. A two-way player for the Braves, Medders batted .326 with a double, a triple, four RBI and four runs scored as a hitter.
Connor Stutts | OF | Brookhaven Bucks (Sunbelt)
Connor Stutts closed out strong summer campaign, batting .328 to rank sixth-best in the Sunbelt. Stutts also placed among the league leaders in both doubles (4) and walks (14), ranking second and fourth, respectively. He led his team in doubles and runs scored (13), while finishing second in average, triples (2) and walks.
Connor Wright | OF | Norcross Astros (Sunbelt)
Also competing in the Sunbelt was Connor Wright, spending the summer with the Norcross Angels. The sophomore outfielder played in 21 games for the Angels, totaling 12 hits, which placed him sixth on the team. Wright had three RBI and scored six runs for Norcross, with his lone triple of the season ranking him second on the team.
Walker McCleney | OF | Yorkton (Canada) Cardinals (Western Major)
Venturing north of the border, Walker McCleney spent his summer in Canada with the Yorkton Cardinals of the Western Major League. The sophomore finished with a .276 average across his 29 games played in the outfield. McCleney's speed was on display, as he stole 22 bases in 26 attempts to pace the Cardinals and finish tied for fourth in the league. He also contributed five doubles, 12 RBI and 16 walks while totaling 19 runs to rank fourth on the squad.
