Taylor Morgan and Hailey Brohaugh score the Tide’s two goals in Thursday’s exhibition
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama women's soccer silenced Middle Tennessee, 2-0, in a three-period friendly, exhibition match Thursday night at the Alabama Soccer Complex. Freshman Taylor Morgan and senior Hailey Brohaugh scored Alabama's pair of goals in the first period, and the Tide's defense limited Middle Tennessee to one shot.
Alabama opened the period attacking the goal early registering four shots on goal and connecting on two. In the 15th minute, Morgan netted the first goal of the night, and Brohaugh followed, knocking in a shot from 30 yards out to give the Tide a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period. Alabama's defense put up a strong front preventing the Blue Raiders from any shot attempts.
"I thought it was a success," head coach Wes Hart said. "You know, naturally, I wanted to win by more goals. But for us, it was about playing against an outside opponent, getting people minutes to work on game fitness as well as just seeing how new players coming into the squad are going to do. It gives a chance to look at a lot of different things. Scoring two goals early on was good. Not allowing many shots, maybe one or two shots, showed that we were stingy defensively."
In the second period, the Tide maintained the lead registering three shots with one on goal and stopped Middle Tennessee from challenging the net for the second time.
In the final 30 minutes, Elena Zang launched Alabama's lone shot, and Kat Stratton faced one Blue Raider attempt that went high.
"For us, it gave us some ideas, some things we need to work on," Hart said. "We'll watch film. We'll break it down and see what we need to focus on leading into our first real game in a week."
Alabama opens the 2017 season with a pair of home games. The Tide will face Jacksonville State on Friday, Aug. 18, and will battle against in-state foe, Samford, on Sunday, Aug. 20, with both matches starting at 7 p.m. CT.
