CAIRO, Egypt – Rising Alabama men's tennis junior Mazen Osama advanced out of the qualifiers of the 2017 Egypt F22 Futures Tournament, reaching the final in his native Cairo before falling to Youssef Hossam.
A First Team All-Southeastern Conference player as a sophomore, Osama pushed the first set of the final to a tiebreaker, before falling 7-5 (5), 6-1.
Osama opened the tourney in the qualifying draw, beating Seif Ghanem of Egypt (6-2, 6-1) and Kshitij Kamal of India (6-1, 6-2) to advance to the main draw.
A 2016 ITA All-American, Osama opened the main draw with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 win over Argentina's Eduardo Agustin Torre. That first set of the main draw would be the only one he would lose in the tournament until the final match.
He downed Portugal's Bernardo Saraiva, 7-5, 6-4 in the round of 16 before beating Anis Ghorbel of Tunisia 7-6 (4), 6-3 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Osama beat Zimbabwe's Benjamin Lock, a former Florida State All-American, 7-6 (8), 6-2 to set up the championship match.
