Junior breaks 31-year-old school mark at Trinidad & Tobago National Open Championships
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama's Ruebin Walters set a school record in the men's 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.30 in the preliminary round of the event at the Trinidad & Tobago National Open Championships on Friday evening in Port of Spain, Trinidad.
Walters' time surpasses the previous record of 13.31 set by Keith Talley at the Goodwill Games in Moscow, USSR on July 6, 1986. Walters' time was the fastest in the prelims and advances him to today's final where he will run for a spot on Trinidad & Tobago's national team that will compete in the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships Aug. 4-13 in London, England.
Walters is one of 13 members of the 2016-17 Alabama track & field program competing in national championship events in the United States, Trinidad & Tobago and Jamaica this weekend. In other action on Friday, Domonique Williams advanced to the finals of the women's 400 meters at the Trinidad & Tobago National Open Championships with a time of 52.76, the fastest time in the preliminaries. Steven Gayle advanced to the semifinals of the men's 400 meters at the Jamaica National Senior Championships in Kingston, Jamaica with a preliminary round time of 46.77.
At the U.S. Junior National Championships in Sacramento, Calif., Alize Ford finished seventh in the finals of the men's 100 meters in 10.61 and Takyera Roberson advanced to the finals of the women's 400 meters with a preliminary round time of 52.02. A top-two finish in Saturday's final will earn Roberson a spot on the U.S. junior national team that will compete in the Pan-American Track & Field Championships July 21-23 in Lima, Peru.
In addition to Walters, Williams, Gayle and Roberson, Alabama will have five other student-athletes in action on Saturday.
