Erin Routliffe fell in straight sets to Duke’s Meible Chi in the first round of the NCAA singles bracket
ATHENS, Ga. – Alabama's No. 13 ranked singles player, senior Erin Routliffe, lost a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Duke's No 43 ranked Meible Chi in the first round of the 2017 NCAA Women's Tennis Singles Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Georgia Wednesday.
Chi held her first serve of the match, before breaking Routliffe to take an early 2-0 lead in the first set. Routliffe responded with back-to-back points of her own to equalize the score at 2-2. That was as close as it would get in the first frame, as Chi rattled off four-straight points to take the first frame in a 6-2 decision.
In the second set, Chi won three of the first four points to take an early 3-1 advantage. Both players held their serve over the next four points, giving Chi a 5-3 lead. Routliffe could not break Chi for the last point of the contest, as the Blue Devil went on to hold her serve to claim a 6-2, 6-3 match victory.
Routliffe and freshman Maddie Pothoff are set to take on Stanford's Emily Arbuthnott and Taylor Davidson in the first round of doubles on Thursday, May 25, at a time to be determined. If the duo advances to the round of 16 on Friday, they will take on the winner of the match between Florida's Anna Danilina and Ingrid Neel and Georgia Tech's Paige Hourigan and Kenya Jones.
The Tide has been represented in the NCAA individual tournament each of the last eight years and in both the singles and doubles tournament in the same season seven times.
