Alabama Rowing Sweeps SMU as Inclement Weather Forces Last-Minute Schedule Change

DALLAS – With inclement weather fast-approaching the Dallas area, Alabama rowing's scheduled Saturday races were consolidated and moved to Friday morning. The Crimson Tide and SMU went head-to-head in four races on White Rock Lake, with Alabama sweeping all four.
"It was very windy today but the team did a good job in handling the conditions," UA head coach Larry Davis said. "It's been pleasing to see that when we've had less-than-ideal conditions this spring the girls have stepped up their game. We've been able to sweep four of our five races this spring which is great. We're learning to handle less-than-great conditions and are performing well at home and on the road and able to sweep. It bodes well for us at the conference championship and it's a positive note to finish on heading into final exams."
Alabama's First Varsity 8+ crew posted the fastest time of the day, a winning mark of 6:43.4, four seconds ahead of SMU. The Tide's Second Varsity 8+ edged out its own Third Varsity 8+ by over two seconds in a close race, with the 2V8+ winning in 6:58.4 ahead of the 3V8+ in 7:01.0. The First Varsity 4+ boat won by a considerable margin over SMU, crossing in 7:26.6, nearly a full minute ahead of the Mustangs. The Tide found similar success with its Second and Third Varsity 4+ crews, posting 7:35.7 and 7:41.5 finishes, respectively, to place first and second ahead of SMU's 2V4+ crew in 8:47.2.
Friday's race is the final competition before the 2017 Big 12 Championship on May 13-14 in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
"The base has been laid, now it's more refinement and subtle changes rather than big changes to get that next-level speed to compete at a higher level," Davis said about what the team will need to work on heading into the conference championship. "We have to be a little cleaner in entry and exit when we connect to the water when we take the stroke. We will have to be a beat or two higher in our racing cadence and that will help us get the boat speed we need to compete for some medals in a couple weeks."
