Alabama Track & Field Teams Open Competition in Southern California

Ferguson, Williams & Reed top three collegians in men’s discus at Long Beach State; Teel fifth in women’s discus
TORRANCE, Calif. – The Alabama track & field teams opened a weekend of competition in Southern California on Thursday afternoon and evening with solid showings in the men's & women's discus and the 3,000-meter steeplechase at a pair of meets in the Los Angeles area.
The men's discus trio of sophomore Kord Ferguson (197-5/60.19m) and seniors Joe Williams (195-7/59.63m) and Hayden Reed (195-4/59.55m) were the top three collegiate finishers in the discus at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate at Long Beach State University. Junior Daniel Haugh (175-11/53.63m) finished sixth in the competition. Ferguson's mark is a personal-best. The marks for Williams and Reed are season-bests. Junior Haley Teel finished fifth in the women's discus at the PCI, with a season-best mark of 164-6 (50.15m).
Alabama also took part in the first day of competition at the Mount SAC Relays at El Camino College. Sophomore Josh Short finished 14th in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase in a personal-best time of 9:04.71. In the women's steeplechase, junior Jessica Gray finished 37th in 11:10.71.
The men and women will compete in several events at Mount SAC on Friday, beginning with the men's long jump and women's high jump at 2 p.m. (CT). Running events will get underway for the Tide at 2:10 p.m. (CT) with the women's 100-meter hurdles. Alabama will also send seniors Payton Ballard and Robbie Farnham-Rose to compete in the 1,500 meters the Brian Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific University on Friday evening.
