3/7/2017 4:58:00 PM | Men's Tennis
RollTide.com will be posting Q&A's of each member on this year's Alabama men's tennis team so fans can get to know the members of our Crimson Tide family. The fifth Q&A is with Spencer Richey, a talented sophomore from Memphis, Tenn., who is studying finance. Richey has a 10-6 overall doubles record this year, including a 7-5 mark since beginning the dual match season. He also has five overall singles wins, including three victories since beginning the spring season.
Q: What was your first visit to campus like?
A: I visited for the first time when I was on my way home from a tournament in Mobile. I remember thinking all the buildings looked so large and new.
Q: What surprised you most about Alabama?
A: After my first few weeks on campus, I learned the layout of the buildings and was actually surprised to find out everything is so centralized and easy to locate.
Q: What is your favorite thing about your hometown?
A: My favorite thing about Memphis is all of the Grizzlies fans and the buzz about the team. I hate to admit that I don't follow the Grizzlies nearly as much in Tuscaloosa.
Q: What is your favorite restaurant in Tuscaloosa?
A: Ichiban. Best bang for your buck Japanese food by far.
Q: What is your favorite tennis memory?
A: I would have to say clinching the state title my senior year of high school on a badly sprained ankle. It wasn't the best win I've ever had or anything, but it was special getting to clinch the win for my team after hopping around on one foot throughout match.
Q: Who inspired you most in tennis?
A: My coach at home, Michael Chamberlain, has probably inspired me the most. He finds ways to make tennis more interesting than just hitting a ball over a net. He really analyzes strengths and weaknesses in players and turns the game into more of a mental chess match. It keeps tennis refreshing rather than repetitive.
Q: When did playing tennis in college become a goal for you?
A: It became a main goal in my life in 8th grade. I think that is the year I improved my game the most and gained confidence in my ability.
Q: What song pumps you up to play?
A: Without Me by Eminem.
Q: What is your favorite movie made before you were born?
A: Pulp Fiction.
Q: What is your favorite movie?
A: No Country for Old Men.
Q: What is your dream job?
A: Tennis Racquet Technician.
Q: If you could live in a book, which book would you live in?
A: The Great Gatsby.
Q: What is your favorite hobby outside of tennis?
A: Bowling.
Q: If you could meet any person in the world who would it be?
A: Jim Carrey.
Q: If you were playing a pro circuit what grand slam would you want to win most?
A: Wimbledon.
Q: What do you like to hear from fans when they are cheering for you?
A: Let's go Rich!
Q: What are some goals you look to achieve this spring season?
A: I want the team to make it to the NCAA tournament. That's my main goal.
Q: If you weren't playing tennis what sport would you play?
A: Well I can't really skate that well, but I would want to play hockey because it is fast paced and action-packed. And it's really cool how hockey players' hair flips up out of their helmet.
Q: Who would win an arm wrestling competition on the team?
A: Langford.
Q: What is your favorite holiday?
A: Halloween. I like dressing up in a costume.
Q: If you could give one message to your fans what would it be?
A: Come watch us play whenever you can and Roll Tide!
