Crimson Tide Posts Four Event Victories on Day 2 of the Bulldog Relays

Samantha Zelden wins women’s javelin in collegiate debut to highlight Alabama’s outdoor opener
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Alabama's Hayden Reed (men's shot put), Samantha Zelden (javelin), Janel Pate (200 meters) and Filippa Fotopoulou (long jump) were event winners on Saturday as the Alabama track & field teams wrapped up competition at the Bulldog Relays at Mississippi State's Mike Sanders Track Complex in Starkville, Miss.
Zelden's throw of 159-0 1/4 (48.46m) on her final attempt is the fourth-best women's' javelin mark in Alabama history. The Folsom, La. freshman also recorded two other throws in the competition that rank among the top-10 all-time at UA to cap off her collegiate debut on Saturday. Sophomore Filippa Fotopoulou recorded a personal best of 20-4 1/2 (6.21m) to win the women's long jump. Sophomore Kiara Williams finished second with a personal-best 19-11 3/4 (6.09m). On the track sophomore Janel Pate rolled to a personal-best to win the women's 200 meters in 23.76.
For the men, Reed posted a mark of 55-7 (16.94m) on his fourth attempt of the shot put competition and saw it hold up as the winning mark through the final two rounds to win in his first outdoor outing of 2017. Fellow senior Nathan Karr finished third at 51-7 3/4 (15.74m).
"I'm pleased with our performance today, head coach Dan Waters said following the meet. "Samantha Zelden's win in her first collegiate competition was great to see and we got strong performances from a number of others as well. All in all, it's a good start to the outdoor season."
Alabama will return to action on March 24 at the Florida State Relays in Tallahassee, Fla.

100 Meters – Junior Terry Jernigan finished fifth in the 100 meters in 10.69. Sophomore Matthew Likely finished seventh in 10.87.
200 Meters – Sophomore Matthew Likely finished fourth in the 200 meters in 21.74. Junior Terry Jernigan finished fifth in 21.80.
Long Jump – Senior Josh McCullan finished fifth in the long jump with a mark of 23-0 3/4 (7.03m).

100 Hurdles – Senior Passion Gamble finished sixth in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.61.
400 Hurdles – Sophomore Jada Jackson finished sixth in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:09.06.
Long Jump – Junior Filippa Fotopoulou won the long jump with a personal-best effort of 20-4 1/2 (6.21m). Sophomore Kiara Williams was second in a personal-best 19-11 3/4 (6.09m).
