Alabama Women’s Tennis Edged at LSU, 4-3

BATON ROUGE, La. – The 44th-ranked Alabama women's tennis team lost a 4-3 thriller to the 27th-ranked LSU Tigers on Friday night at the LSU Tennis Complex. With the loss, the Crimson Tide falls to 6-9 overall and 0-5 in Southeastern Conference play, while the Tigers improve to 10-4 and 3-2 in league play.
LSU claimed the first double match of the contest, as the Tigers' No. 42 ranked doubles pair Joana Valle Costa and Ryann Foster won a 6-2 decision on court one over Alabama's No. 25 doubles tandem of senior Erin Routliffe and freshman Maddie Pothoff. The Tide responded as sophomore Andie Daniell and senior Joanna Savva claimed a 6-4 decision on court two over LSU's Jade Lewis and Becca Weissmann. With the doubles point on the line, senior Danielle Spielmann and freshman Juliana Valero outlasted Jessica Golovin and Skylar Holloway, 7-5, on court three to give the Tide a 1-0 match lead heading into singles.
LSU was able to equalize the match score at 1-1 to begin singles play, as Golovin topped Pothoff (No. 4) in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Alabama won back-to-back singles matches in straight sets on courts two and six to jump out to a 3-1 match lead. The Tide's No. 124 ranked singles player in Daniell (No. 2) won in straight sets over LSU's No. 116 ranked singles play Valle Costa, 6-1, 6-4, before Valero (No. 6) topped Holloway in straight set, 6-4, 7-5, giving Alabama a two-point match lead at 3-1. The Tigers went on to win three straight singles matches to clinch the come-behind 4-3 victory. LSU's 83rd-ranked singles player in Foster defeated Spielmann (No. 3), 6-3, 7-5, before Weissmann won in straight sets over Savva (No. 5), 7-5, 6-1, to tie the match score at 3-3. With the match point on the line, LSU's No. 39 singles player Lewis outlasted the Tide's 59th-ranked singles player in Routliffe, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, to clinch.
The Tide will be back in action on Sunday, March 19, when it travels to College Station, Texas, to take on the 22nd-ranked Texas A&M Aggies in a match that is set to start at noon CT.
