Crimson Tide rallies after trailing 2-0, but comes up short, 4-3
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The 46th-ranked Alabama women's tennis team came up short against No. 16 Tennessee, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at the Alabama Tennis Stadium. With the loss, the Crimson Tide moves to 6-8 overall and 0-4 against Southeastern Conference opponents, while the win bring the Lady Volunteers to 14-4 on the season and 1-3 in league play.
Tennessee took a 1-0 lead after winning on two of the three doubles courts. At the No. 3 spot, Volunteer freshmen Ariadna Riley and Johanna Silva posted a 6-1 victory over Alabama sophomore Andie Daniell and freshman Juliana Valero. On court two, Tide senior Danielle Spielmann and junior Smith Hinton won back-to-back games after trailing 5-2, but in the end, Tennessee sophomore Sadie Hammond and redshirt freshman Gabby Schuck served up the 6-4 win to give the Vols the early advantage. The matchup on court one would go unfinished with the score even at 4-4.
Tennessee picked up the first win in singles on court six to take a 2-0 lead in the overall match score, but Alabama's seniors Erin Routliffe and Spielmann responded on courts one and three, winning in straight sets to even the match. The Vols would go back on top after winning the matchup on court five where Silva outlasted freshman Maddie Pothoff, 7-6(6), 6-1. All eyes turned to the east bank of courts where No. 2 and No. 4 were trading games to keep the match alive. Tennessee's Riley would hold on from the No. 4 spot, edging out Hinton, 7-6(4), 7-5, to give the Lady Vols the team victory. Daniell would tack the final point on for the Tide as she captured a 6-1, 5-7, 6-2 win over Hammond to move to 10-1 in singles in dual match play.
Next up, Alabama hits the road for a pair of SEC matchup beginning with LSU on Friday. First serve is set for 4 p.m. CT in Baton Rouge, La.
