Freshman Thibault Cancel earns first SEC Men’s Tennis Freshman of the Week accolade
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama's Thibault Cancel earned his first Southeastern Conference Men's Tennis Freshman of the Week honor, which was announced by the league office on Wednesday.
The Toulouse, France, native went 4-0 last weekend, including two wins in singles play and doubles play. Both of Cancel's singles victories came in straight sets, including a 6-2, 6-2 win over Clemson's 123rd-ranked singles player Daffra Sanon. He has posted a 2-1 mark with new doubles partner freshman Edson Ortiz, as the pair is coming off back-to-back doubles wins against Texas Tech and Clemson.
Cancel has made an immediate impact to the Crimson Tide lineup, as the skilled freshman is tied for first on the team for the best singles record at 5-1. In singles play, Cancel has compiled an overall 11-3 record, including a 5-1 mark from the No. 2 singles position. In doubles play, Cancel has collected an overall 7-6 record, while posting a 4-2 mark from the No. 3 doubles spot.
The Tide will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 10, when it travels to Stillwater, Okla., to take on the Oklahoma State Cowboys at 5 p.m. CT.
