Burks wins long jump and 60 meters in her first outing of the season; Felpel captures fourth shot put victory in four meets
BATON ROUGE, La. – Quanesha Burks won the women's long jump and 60 meters in her season debut and Kyle Felpel and Ruebin Walters posted victories in the men's shot put and men's 60-meter hurdles at the Bayou Bengal Invitational at LSU on Friday evening.
Alabama sent only five athletes to Friday's meet in Baton Rouge on what was originally an off weekend for the team, but the group recorded four victories and a second-place finish in five events. Burks, who is seeking her second consecutive NCAA long jump title this season, opened the competition with a mark of 21-4 3/4 (6.52m) that held up for the win. The jump came on her first attempt of the season and equaled the third-best distance in the NCAA so far this season. The jump is also the seventh-best in Alabama history.
Later in the evening, the senior sprinted to victory in the 60 meters in a personal-best time of 7.27, the seventh-fastest time nationally in 2017 and the fastest time by an Alabama sprinter this season.
Felpel won the shot put for the fourth time in four outings this season. His mark of 60-8 3/4 (18.51m) on his final attempt of the preliminary round held up as the winning mark in the finals.
On the track, junior Ruebin Walters (7.85) and senior Angelo Goss (8.03) finished 1-2 in the men's 60-meter hurdles. Walters' time is the eighth-fastest in school history. Goss has finished in the top three in all four meets he has competed in this season. Walters has now won the hurdles in both meets he has appeared in for the Tide this season.
Alabama's full men's and women's teams return to action Feb. 10-11, with the teams splitting their squads between the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa and the Tiger Paw Invitational in Clemson, S.C.
