TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – After a four-month hiatus from competition, Alabama rowing returns to the water on Saturday to kick off its spring season against Eastern Michigan on the Black Warrior River at 9 a.m. CT.
"This weekend is a chance for us to do a little sorting out of our crews and get a race under our belt," UA head coach Larry Davis said. "We're certainly excited to have Eastern Michigan down here to compete."
Alabama and Eastern Michigan won't race the typical 2,000-meter spring course length but will instead race a number of 1,000-meter pieces. Starting at 9 a.m., the First Varsity 8+ will compete followed by the Second Varsity 8+ 10 minutes later and then the Novice 8+/Third Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+. The boats will then go through the same rotation three more times for a total of four sessions, concluding roughly at 11:40 a.m.
"Our goal the last couple of years has been to be one of the three fastest teams in our conference," Davis said. "It's a very competitive league, one of the top five in the country. Last year we made some progress but didn't get the top-three finish we wanted. We had some boats win medals but this year we want to put it all together for all the crews."
This weekend is the first of seven spring races for the Crimson Tide. Alabama will travel to Dublin, Va., to face Bucknell on Saturday, March 11 before returning to Tuscaloosa to face Dayton on Saturday, March 25 at 9 a.m. The regatta against the Flyers will be the Tide's senior day and its annual Power of Pink event.
