CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Alabama Rowing posted a strong team showing in Saturday action at the Head of the Hooch Regatta, earning eight top-10 finishes including a pair of medal performances in the Championship 8+ and Championship 2x.
"Overall, I thought all our crews rowed well today," head coach Larry Davis said. "We set a new standard by winning a bronze medal in the Championship 8+. We have never medaled in this event before today. We also earned a second-place finish in the Championship 2x and had eight out of nine crews turn in top-10 performances."
The Crimson Tide opened Saturday racing with a competitive Championship 8+ race, with the top Alabama crew finishing in third place behind Louisville and Clemson with a time of 16:20.64. Alabama's other two boats in the race placed ninth (16:56.68) and sixteenth (17:34.82).
In the College & Club Novice 8+ race, both of Alabama's boats posted top-10 finishes, including a fourth-place time of 17:35.06 and a seventh-place mark of 18:46.54.
The Tide followed that with a silver-medal finish in the Championship 2x as senior Meghan Hampton and sophomore Kylie Diffley teamed up to cross the line in 19:47.86. Sophomore Gaby Crawford and freshman Stephanie Parker were close behind in fourth place (20:25.31). Alabama's remaining top-10 finishes of the day came in the Women's Championship 4+, where the Tide finished back-to-back in seventh (18:11.25) and eighth (18:16.80) place.
"Even with today's success, there are still things I think we can improve upon," Davis said. "We're looking forward to taking care of those things in tomorrow's racing. I believe the opportunity is there for us to medal tomorrow in the Open 8+."
Alabama will conclude its weekend at the Head of the Hooch Sunday in the Women's Open 8+, set for an 11:49 a.m. CT start.
