Tide turns in 19-under par round on Sunday, the second-lowest in school history
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Alabama women's golf team carded a blistering 19-under par third round on Sunday but fell one shot short of victory in the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational at the par-72, 6,379-yard Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Duke (283-271-279/833) finished at 31-under par after a 9-under par third round to claim the title by a single stroke over the Crimson Tide (285-279-270/834), which finished at 30-under par. South Carolina (284-281-281/846) finished third at 18-under par. Arkansas (288-279-284/851) was fourth at 13-unde par. Tournament host North Carolina (289-283-284/856) finished fifth at 8-under par. The runner-up finish gives Alabama three top-two finishes in as many outings this season.
Alabama's final round score vs. par is the second-lowest in school history, behind only the 25-under par third round shot by the Tide at the 2016 Mason Rudolph Championship. The third round 270 ranks as the third-lowest round ever shot by a UA team. Head coach Mic Potter's squad has now turned in four of the five lowest rounds in school history in their first three tournaments this season.
"Today was a good day," Potter said following the round. "We got a little too far behind after the first two rounds but we still managed to not only come back but take the lead at one point. The key is that we gave ourselves an opportunity to win on the final day."
Junior Lauren Stephenson (72-68-66/206) led the Tide again on Sunday with a 6-under par 66 to finish in a tie for third place at 10-under par. Sophomore Kristen Gillman (71-69-67/207) tied for sixth place, one shot behind Stephenson at 207. Junior Cheyenne Knight (74-71-67/212) was five-under par on Sunday to tie for 16th at 4-under par. Senior Lakareber Abe (70-71-72/213) finished at 1-under par and tied for 20th. Freshman Angelica Moresco (72-73-70/215) was 2-under par for the round to finish in a tie for 26th place at 1-under par.
"Lauren has played great all season and Kristen was strong again as well," Potter added. "They've been our leaders all season and were again this weekend. It was nice to see Angelica finish at 1-under and see Cheyenne rebound and shoot 5-under today. Lakareber turned in another solid performance too. We have five very good ball-strikers and I've very pleased with where we are right now. Even though we've only won one of our first three tournaments, we're 86-under par for the season. I'm not disappointed in that at all."
Alabama will conclude the fall portion of its 2017-18 schedule at UNC-Wilmington's The Landfall Tradition, Oct. 27-29 at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C.
