Alabama Women’s Golf Begins Play at Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational Friday

Weekend tournament first of two in North Carolina this month
TUSCALOOSA Ala. – The Alabama women's golf team returns to action this weekend at the University of North Carolina's Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational, Oct. 13-15 at the par-72, 6,379-yard Finley Golf Club in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Alabama is making its second appearance at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational. The Crimson Tide finished as the runner-up in its first appearance in 2016. In addition to the second-ranked Tide, this year's field includes six other teams ranked in the Golfweek/Sagarin Top 25 - No. 1 Arkansas, No. 6 Duke, No. 9 Michigan State, No. 14 South Carolina, No. 16 Vanderbilt and No. 24 Virginia.
Other teams in the field include Iowa, Louisville, Michigan, North Carolina, North Carolina State, North Carolina-Wilmington, Ohio State, Rollins (Fla.), Tulane, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. Individually, 15 of the top-50 players in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index are scheduled to compete.

Alabama's line-up this weekend is unchanged from the first two tournaments of the sesaon: Senior Lakareber Abe (70.83 scoring average), juniors Cheyenne Knight (70.50) and Lauren Stephenson (67.17), sophomore Kristen Gillman (68.33) and freshman Angelica Moresco (73.33).
National Rankings
Alabama boasts two of the nation's top 10-ranked golfers heading into this weekend's action. Lauren Stephenson (second), and Kristen Gillman (10th) are ranked in the latest Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index, released Oct. 4. As a team, Alabama is ranked second nationally by Golfweek/Sagarin. Arkansas is the nation's No. 1 team with a 68.99 rating, followed by the Crimson Tide (69.80), Arizona State (70.04), UCLA (70.06) and Oklahoma State (70.45).
Last Outing
The Crimson Tide won the Schooner Fall Classic at the Belmar Golf Club in Norman, Okla. The Tide shot 21-under par (281-281-269/831) and finished with the third-lowest 54-hole score in school history. Sophomore Kristen Gillman (68-68-64/200) shared individual medalist honors with a school-record-equaling 200 and a career-low 13-under par performance on the par-71 course.
