Destin and Herrscher establish new UA standards in women’s pentathlon and men’s pole vault
CLEMSON, S.C. – Stacey Destin and Will Herrscher set schools records in the women's pentathlon and men's pole vault, respectively, and the Alabama track & field teams won nine events on Day 1 of the Bob Pollock Invitational at Clemson University on Friday.
Competing in the first pentathlon of her career, Destin posted a total score of 4,144 to win the competition and establish a new Alabama school record. The total is also the top score in the NCAA so far this season. Herrscher, who equaled the previous Alabama record of 17-2 3/4 (5.25m) two weeks ago at the Commodore Invitational, improved that mark by nearly five feet with an event-winning clearance of 17-7 (5.36m).
"I'm excited about our performance today," head coach Dan Waters said. "We've been focusing on getting better technically and doing a lot of work in that area coming into this weekend. This was an ideal meet for us and we took a big step forward. Now we need to take another one tomorrow."
The Tide men were five-for-five in finals on Saturday as Robbie Farnham-Rose won the mile (4:04.63), Reubin Walters won the 60-meter hurdles (7.83), Jereem Richards won the 400 meters (46.37) and Daniel Haugh won the weight throw (72-8 1/2; 22.16m) in addition to Herrscher's school-record win the pole vault.
Richards' time is the second-fastest in school history and the second-best time in the NCAA this season. Walters' time ties for the fifth-best in UA history, while his prelim time (7.90) ranks as the 10th-best all-time. Haugh's effort is second only to the school record he set earlier this season and he also added the third- and fourth-best throws in Alabama history in today's competition. Farnham-Rose also collected his third victory in three races this season. He previously won the mile at the Auburn Invitational on Jan. 21 and the 3,000 meters at the Commodore Invitational on Jan. 13.
The Tide women came away with four event victories on Friday as well. In addition to Destin's record-setting pentathlon performance, Alabama also got wins from Diamond Gause in the 60 meters (7.44), Domonique Williams in the 400 meters (54.17) and Filippa Fotopoulou in the long jump (20-3; 6.17m). The times for Gause and Williams are season-bests for the Tide.
Day 2 of the Pollock Invitational will get underway Saturday with field events beginning at 10 a.m. CT. Running events will begin at 11 a.m. at the Clemson University Indoor Complex.
