Records Fall in Alabama Track & Field Season Opener

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Daniel Haugh and Will Herrscher set school records in the men's weight throw and men's pole vault, respectively and Filippa Fotopoulou won the women's long jump as the Alabama men's and women's track & field teams kicked off the 2017 indoor season at Vanderbilt's Commodore Invitational on Friday evening in Nashville, Tenn.
Haugh's NCAA season-leading mark of 73-8 1/4 (22.46m) won the weight throw and established a new school record on his final throw of the competition. In all, three of Haugh's four clean throws surpassed 70 feet and rank among the top four throws in school history. Herrscher also turned in a first place finish in the collegiate pole vault (17-2 3/4; 5.25m) to equal the previous Alabama indoor best, which had stood since 2002.
Senior Klyvens Delaunay recorded an indoor personal best in the long jump (24-9 1/4; 7.55m) to finish second in the event. Other debut performances included freshmen James Williams and Will Allen. Williams finished fifth in the long jump with an effort of 6-6 3/4 (2.00m) while Allen finished sixth in the 200 meters in 21.64.
In the women's events, Fotopoulou posted a personal best of 20-9 3/4 (6.34m) to win the long jump while sophomore Kiara Williams also turned in a personal best to finish third at 19-10 3/4 (6.06m). Fellow sophomore Stacey Destin finished fifth at 19-7 1/2 (5.98).
Freshman Symone Darius began her collegiate career with a 15th-place finish in the 200 meters in 24.60. Senior Briana Sims finished 19th in 24.80. In the women's hammer, junior Haley Teel and sophomore Danielle McConnell finished 13th and 18th, respectively. Teel posted a mark of 53-11 (16.43m) while McConnell's top throw came in at 49-10 (15.19m).
Alabama will wrap up competition at the Commodore Invitational on Saturday afternoon. Field events will get underway at 10:30 a.m. CT. Running events begin at 1 p.m.

200 Meters – In his collegiate debut, freshman Will Allen finished sixth overall in a time of 21.64.  Â
Distance Medley Relay – The quartet of Patrick Grant, Noah Karr, Oliver Rigg and Elliott Miller finished seventh in a time of 10:20.08
High Jump – Freshman James Williams finished fifth in his collegiate debut with an effort of 6-6 3/4 (2.00m) in the high jump. Williams passed on the first two heights before posting an opening jump of 6-4 3/4 (1.95m) on his second attempt at that height.

Long Jump – Competing in his first meet for Alabama, graduate transfer Klyvens Delaunay posted a personal-best mark of 24-9 1/4 (7.55m) to finish second in his first long jump event since 2015.

Weight Throw – On his final throw of the evening, junior Daniel Haugh won the weight throw and established both a new NCAA season-high and Alabama school record with a mark of 73-8 1/4 (22.46m). Haugh had already surpassed the old UA record of 70-8 on his previous attempt with a toss of 70-10 (21.59) before improving on that mark in the final round. In all, Haugh recorded the first, second and fourth-best (70-7; 21.51m) throws in school history. Senior Elias Hakansson, who had set the previous record in 2014, finished second tonight with a mark of 679-8 (20.62m).

Weight Throw – Junior Haley Teel and sophomore Danielle McConnell finished 13th and 18th, respectively, in the women's weight throw. Teel posted a mark of 53-11 (16.43m) to finish second in her flight while McConnell's top throw of 49-10 (15.19m) was the sixth-best in the same flight.
