Classroom Champion: Quanetria Bolton
Heading into her junior year, Quanetria Bolton has been a key to Alabama women's basketball's quest to return to the elite level both at the Southeastern Conference and national level. She has also been an important part of the Crimson Tide's ongoing mission of being dominant in the classroom.
"Coach (Kristy) Curry and the staff really emphasize that we are student-athletes and that the student part of that comes first," Bolton said. "They keep us focused on academics and let us know that what we do in the classroom is first and foremost."
That emphasis on academics paid dividends when Bolton earned a summer grade point average of 3.468, helping pace the women's basketball team to an outstanding 3.58 team GPA for the summer.
Among the women's basketball players who attended classes this summer, all 11 posted better than a 3.0 GPA including Taylor Berry and Jordan Lewis who both hold career GPAs of 4.0. In addition to those two carrying a career 4.0, Trista Magee earned a 4.0, all A-pluses, for the summer.
"The most important thing to realize coming in, is that time management is so important and that utilizing the resources that we have available to us at Alabama is a key to being successful in the classroom and on the court," Bolton said.Â
Bolton, who carries a 3.36 cumulative GPA through her first two seasons at the Capstone is pursuing a degree in exercise science.
"Coming out of high school I had a passion for knowing how the body moves," Bolton said. "Then, when I first got to Alabama, we hosted an elite camp and that's when I developed an interest in coaching. I decided that pursuing a degree in exercise science would help me in both areas."
In addition to her standout summer in the classroom, Bolton was one of six Alabama women's basketball players who earned a place on the SEC Academic Honor Roll last season.
The junior from Anniston, Ala. played in 59 games through her first two years on the Crimson Tide's roster, including 19 starts as a sophomore. With two more seasons left in an Alabama uniform, the All-State player at Anniston High School already has her eye on life after her playing days are over.
"I would like to go into coaching after I graduate," Bolton said. "It's my goal to one day coach at the NCAA Division I level."
