Alabama Women’s Opens Play at the Rice Invitational

HOUSTON, Texas – Alabama women's tennis posted a 2-0 mark in doubles play and a 4-1 record in the first day of the Rice Invitational at the George R. Brown Tennis Center in Houston, Texas. The three-day event features 16 different teams.
In singles play, freshman Juliana Valero outlasted Mareen Slattery of Denver, 6-2, 1-6, 7-5. Freshman Maddie Pothoff topped SMU's Ana Perez, 6-4, 2-6, 6-1, before junior Smith Hinton defeated Julia Navajo Melendez of Texas State, 6-0, 6-1. The Crimson Tide's final singles win came from senior Danielle Spielmann in a 6-4, 6-3 decision over McNeese State's Sarah Jurakova, 6-4, 6-3.
Valero partnered up with Pothoff to outlast Wagland and Granic of Texas, 6-4, before Hinton and Joanna Saava overcame UTSA's Rossell and Kato, 6-3.
