The University of Alabama Remains a Leader in Stadium Security

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The University of Alabama remains a leader in stadium security throughout college football. Alabama Athletics liaises with a wide range of law enforcement agencies in order to provide a safe and secure game day experience every fall at Bryant-Denny Stadium. UAPD, Tuscaloosa Police, Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Department and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) along with representatives of the U.S. Marshals service and the FBI's Tuscaloosa field office all play a role at some level in keeping Bryant-Denny secure on game days.
Alabama was one of the first universities in the country to go to a 48-hour lockdown of its stadium when the policy was implemented in 2009. Every Thursday before Saturday home games, Bryant-Denny is locked down by Tuscaloosa PD/UAPD, the stadium is swept with bomb dogs and from that point until kickoff on Saturday, anyone entering the stadium is subject to search and must have stadium credentials to gain access. UAPD maintains a constant patrol of the stadium during this period with assistance from its city and county law enforcement colleagues.
One change to the security plan for 2016 is the addition of the clear bag policy that went into effect at the home opener with Western Kentucky on Sept. 10. In an effort to prevent weapons or other prohibited items from entering the stadium, bags of all types are prohibited, except for clear plastic, vinyl or PVC totes that are no larger than 12"x6"x12". Small clutches or wallets are permitted, but must be no larger than 6.5"x4.5", with or without a handle or strap. One-gallon clear plastic re-sealable storage bags are also permitted. All permitted bags entering the stadium are subject to search. More information on the new policy and what is permitted can be found on RollTide.com.
This is about both safety and improving the overall fan experience. The University of Alabama frequently reviews its public safety and stadium security policies looking for ways to improve them. The most recent review concluded that there is a need to adjust the bag policy to enhance public safety and make stadium access more efficient by limiting the size and style of bags carried into the stadium. This proactive measure enhances safety inside and outside the stadium, and speeds the security screening process for all fans.
Alabama Athletics will continue to work with local and state law enforcement agencies to review its policies and procedures to assure that Bryant-Denny Stadium continues to provide the top game day experience in college football.
