AUBURN, Ala. – On Thursday night, the Alabama soccer team tied with in-state rival Auburn, 2-2, in an exhibition contest at the Auburn Soccer Complex in Auburn, Ala. Junior Lacey Clarida and sophomore Emma Welch led the way offensively, as they both registered a goal each in the match.
"I am very proud of the effort and performance from our team tonight," said head coach Wes Hart. "Tonight we proved the fact that we were a good team, even though that's something I already knew. We played a good even game against a very good Auburn team tonight, and we showed some great moments of possessing the ball and attacking."
The Crimson Tide attempted three shots in the first half, and one of those shots results in a goal from Clarida at the 7:01 mark. Welch gave the assist on Clarida's goal, as she executed a beautiful corner kick to give Alabama an early 1-0 lead. Both teams battled defensively for the rest of the first half, and the Tide took a 1-0 lead going into the second half.
Auburn's Hannah Alspach tallied a goal from 15 yards out on a combination from Dani Solaru and Casie Ramsier at the 45:38 mark to tie the score at 1-1. Alabama responded, as Welch executed a one-on-one breakaway situation at the 55:23 mark to give Alabama back the lead at 2-1. Late in the second half at the 79:25 mark, Auburn's Ellie Leek capitalized on a penalty kick to tie the match at 2-2. Overtime was not played, because it was a scheduled friendly exhibition match. Tonight's contest marks the only time that the two will face each other this season.
"Auburn showed us some areas we need to improve on in the next few weeks, but I was impressed with many of our individual performances tonight," said Hart. "Some of our freshmen played like seasoned veterans, and our upperclassman attackers, Lacey and Auburn Mercer, proved to be a handful up top. Lacey continued her momentum from scoring goals in the spring, and Chatham DeProspo was a huge defensive presence for us inside tonight as she helped us win a lot balls and maintain possession. We are looking forward to a few days at Orange Beach, and another great test against Troy on Sunday."
The Crimson Tide will return to action on Sunday, Aug. 14, as it travels to Orange Beach, Ala., to take on Troy at the Orange Beach Sportsplex.
