The Battle Plan
5/20/2016 12:00:00 AM | General
Hosting Post Season Events Is a Priority at Alabama
The first part of our Mission Statement says that we want "to recruit and develop student-athletes to compete at the highest levels in all our sports." In order to compete for championships, our teams have to make it to postseason play. Once we get to postseason play, anything can happen. We've all seen championship events where teams get hot and win the championship, even though their regular season performance wasn't great. In fact, Alabama has won national championships in football, women's golf and gymnastics in seasons when they didn't win the SEC championship.
I believe that all of our facilities should be up to the highest standards in every sport, in part, so that we are capable of hosting SEC and NCAA Championships in as many sports as possible. We owe it to our coaches and student-athletes to make that happen. We're not there yet, but we are moving in that direction. It costs money to host championships, but we consider this expense as part of our investment in competing for championships and building champions.
In the last few months we have hosted NCAA regional competitions in gymnastics (Coleman Coliseum), women's golf (Shoal Creek), men's golf (Ol' Colony), softball (Rhoads Stadium), and the SEC Track & Field Championships (Sam Bailey Track). Getting Ol'Colony and the Sam Bailey Track & Field Complex in shape to host these events took a huge amount of effort from Coaches Jay Seawell and Mic Potter in golf and Coach Dan Waters in track & field. Additionally, our building and grounds crew and many others in the department were involved in the process. It has definitely been a labor of love and I am very proud of all who gave so much effort.
Our event management department has done an unbelievable job of putting on championship-quality events all year, but what they have gone through recently - and are still going through with our softball regional this weekend - is way above and beyond the call of duty. Our entire athletics department staff has pitched in over the last few months to help put on these events. There is no doubt that playing on home fields, courts and courses provides a competitive advantage to our teams. We will continue to improve facilities and bid to host as many SEC and NCAA events as we can.
As I have said many times, there is great educational value in sports. Lessons learned during competition can - and do - carry over in life after leaving The University. We learn lessons in losing that are very valuable. But lessons learned in winning championships are irreplaceable. Learning what it takes to compete and win at the highest level provides clear examples of qualities that apply to achieving success in life.
Elements like planning, preparation, conditioning of the body, mind, and spirit, execution of the plan, and rising to the occasion when things are going bad are just a few of the lessons student-athletes can clearly apply to success in life.
Our women's golf team has already traveled out to Eugene, Oregon, to compete in the NCAA Championships. Our men's team is headed out there for the same competition next week. Our softball team is playing this weekend and, if successful, will advance to the Super Regional round. Our baseball team is fighting to win the next two games against South Carolina, next week's SEC Tournament and, hopefully, another NCAA Tournament.
I hope you will come out this weekend and support our softball and baseball teams either in person, or by listening on the radio, watching on television, or following our online coverage via rolltide.com and our social media platforms.
Fulfilling the Mission: Academic All-District At-Large Honorees
The Academic All-District At-Large teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), were announced recently and, once again, the Crimson Tide was prominently featured. Unlike the rest of the CoSIDA Academic All-District/All-America teams that are selected from one sport, the at-large teams span the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving, tennis, water polo, bowling, field hockey and rowing. On the women's side, gymnasts Mackenzie Brannan and Lauren Beers earned a place on the All-District IV team while a trio of swimmers - Connor Oslin, Anton McKee and Pavel Romanov - earned places on the men's team. It was Lauren's third consecutive district honor, the second for Connor and Anton, and the first for Mackenzie and Pavel. All five now move onto the Academic All-America ballot. Alabama is the only school with three men on the District IV list and the only school among all eight districts to have three student-athletes from the same team earn the honor. Over the last four years, Alabama has put a phenomenal 22 men and women on the district at-large teams, including a record eight in 2013-14.
Crimson Tide Foundation Update: Baseball Hosts CTF Day This Saturday
The Athletics Department is appreciative of the contributions of our donors and the support you show this program each day. To celebrate our donors and thank you for your generosity, the Crimson Tide Foundation (CTF) and Alabama Baseball are partnering to bring you CTF Day this Saturday, May 21. Sports Updates
Baseball
Alabama continues a three-game series with South Carolina tonight and on Saturday to close out the inaugural season at the new Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The Tide entered the South Carolina series on a four-game winning streak, its second-longest of the season, after sweeping Arkansas in Fayetteville, its first sweep of the Hogs in Arkansas since 2000, before defeating Samford on Tuesday. We fell short in the opener against the Gamecocks last night. The Tide's offense scored 31 runs over the four games entering the South Carolina series, its most across any four games this season. The series with the Gamecocks will decide Alabama's seeding in the SEC Tournament, for which UA has qualified for the sixth time in seven seasons under head coach Mitch Gaspard. The SEC Tournament starts Tuesday in Hoover with a single-elimination play-in game for the teams seeded fifth through 12th, while the top four seeds will receive a bye. While our team appears to already have a strong resume for earning a regional bid, a strong showing in the SEC Tournament would bolster the Tide's bid for a spot in the postseason.
Men's Basketball
Earlier this week, Coach Avery Johnson announced the signing of highly-rated transfer Daniel Giddens, a 6-10, 230-pound power forward/center who played his freshman season at Ohio State. Daniel will sit out the 2016-17 season due to NCAA transfer rules and will have three years of eligibility remaining. During his freshman season at Ohio State, Daniel played in 33 games, was a starter in seven games, averaged 3.8 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 18.2 minutes per game. As a high school player for Oak Hill Academy, Daniel was a consensus top 50 prospect and one of the top 10 centers in the nation as he helped his team to a 47-1 record in 2014-15. A native of Marietta, Ga., he played at Wheeler High School before attending Oak Hill Academy. At Wheeler, he averaged 12 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks per game while leading his team to the Georgia Region 5 title. He was also a member of the USA Basketball Men's U-16 National Team that won the gold medal at the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship. After his intent to transfer became known, Daniel was rated by ESPN.com as the No. 2-rated player in its "Best Available Transfers" in the nation.
Men's Golf
The Tide finished third at the NCAA Men's Golf Tuscaloosa Regional that ended Monday. That showing advanced Alabama to the NCAA Men's National Championships in Eugene, Ore., which will be held May 27-June 1 at the Eugene Country Club. This is the 18th time in program history that the men's golf team will advance to the national championships and the ninth time it has happened under head coach Jay Seawell. Our team was led by freshman Davis Riley, who tied for fourth overall in the individual standings. For the tournament, Riley finished second in the entire field with 16 total birdies and was fifth in par-four scoring average. Junior Robby Shelton tied for 10th in the event, his 23rd top-10 career finish in 33 events, and his 18th career par-or-lower tournament finish.
Women's Golf
Our No. 1-ranked women's golf team begins its quest for its second national championship starting today at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore. The tournament will run through May 25. This will be the 12th NCAA Championships appearance for our women's team and the 11th appearance in a row under head coach Mic Potter. In addition to seeking a second team title, senior Emma Talley will be defending her 2015 individual championship. Emma became the first women's golfer in Alabama history to win NCAA medalist honors last year. In addition to following the team through RollTide.com, I encourage you to watch the Golf Channel's coverage of the final three days of the tournament starting Monday, May 23, at 6 p.m. CT and continuing Tuesday from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday's match play championship will air from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Rowing
Coach Larry Davis and his team completed their season at the Big 12 Championships last weekend in Oak Ridge, Tenn., taking home a silver medal in the First Varsity 4+ and a bronze medal in the Third Varsity 8+. The medals are the first for the Crimson Tide at a conference championship. Senior Olivia Dennis was named to the All-Big 12 team. Olivia has been a staple in our First Varsity 8+ since her sophomore season and has set a strong example in the classroom, earning Academic All-Big 12 and Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll honors during her career. The Tide placed 35 student-athletes on this year's Academic All-Big 12 team, an improvement from the 25 that qualified last year in the team's debut season in the conference. Of the 140 First Team conference-wide honorees, only 10 of them achieved a 4.0 grade-point average (GPA) with the Tide accounting for six of those. To qualify, a student-athlete must carry a cumulative 3.00 GPA and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's spring contests.
Softball
Coach Patrick Murphy's team is making its 18th-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance this week, a stretch dating back to 1999. The Tide has earned a No. 6 national seed and is hosting a regional round for the 12th straight season. Alabama has won 11 straight NCAA Regional titles, the longest active streak in Division I softball. Our streak of 18 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances puts the Tide in rare company. Only seven other schools have tournament appearance streaks of at least 18 years: Arizona (30), Oklahoma (23), Washington (23), Michigan (21), UCLA (18), Louisiana-Lafayette (18) and Notre Dame (18). Our streak is the longest of any SEC team. This weekend's regional is a reunion of sorts, as two former Tide players return as coaches for two of the visiting teams. Samford head coach Mandy Burford played at Alabama from 2004-07 and appeared in 217 games, including 135 starts, primarily as an outfielder. Texas State assistant coach Kelly Kretschman was Alabama's first All-American, earning the first of four such honors as a freshman in 1998. She still holds Alabama career records in runs (288), hits (368), doubles (65), triples (16) and home runs (60). Also, congratulations to senior Haylie McCleney, who has been selected as one of 10 finalists for USA Softball Player of the Year. One of 26 finalists for the award last season and a top-10 finalist two years ago as a sophomore, Haylie is one of four SEC players on the list.
Swimming & Diving
With the collegiate season over, our swimmers and divers are turning their attention to a summer full of competition and, with this being an Olympic year, their focus is sharper than ever. This past weekend, several of our swimmers competed at the Atlanta Classic, some using it as a tune-up meet while others were striving to earn a spot at the United States Olympic Trials. Along the way, sophomore Temarie Tomley set long-course school records in the 100-meter freestyle (56.31) and 200 freestyle (2:01.80). Just to make it a clean sweep of the sprint freestyle events, senior Bailey Scott tied her own school record in the 50 freestyle (26.02). Sophomore Mia Nonnenberg also set a school mark in Atlanta, bettering her own 400 individual medley record with a time of 4:42.19. Alabama is slated to have several of our past and present athletes at this summer's Olympic Games in Rio and I can't wait to see what they can achieve on the biggest stage there is.
Men's Tennis
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association Awards were announced recently, with two going to the Crimson Tide. Senior Becker O'Shaughnessey received the ITA/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award, while freshman Mazen Osama was named the ITA Southern Region Rookie of the Year. Becker became the Tide's fourth winner of the Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award, following Daniil Proskura (2013 and 2014) and Joseph Jung (2006). Mazen is Alabama's second consecutive winner of the Rookie of the Year award, following Korey Lovett in 2015. Sophomore Korey Lovett and Osama are days away from heading to Tulsa to represent the Crimson Tide in the NCAA individual championships as the duo was selected as a No. 5-8 seed in doubles, while Osama was also chosen for the field of 64 in singles. Action begins at the Case Tennis Center on Wednesday, May 25, for singles and Thursday, May 26, for doubles.
Women's Tennis
Freshman Andie Daniell continued to add to her growing list of postseason accolades as she was named ITA Southern Region Rookie of the Year last week. She is the third Alabama women's player to win the award, joining Mary Anne Macfarlane (2011) and Alexa Guarachi (2010). Andie, and junior Erin Routliffe are gearing up to head to Tulsa for the NCAA Singles Championship, which begins on Wednesday, May 25, at the Case Tennis Center. This marks the fifth time in program history that the Tide is sending two student-athletes to compete in the singles tournament. Erin is making her second consecutive appearance, while Andie is the first Crimson Tide freshman to make the cut since Alexa Guarachi in 2010.
Track and Field
Our men's and women's track and field teams will be off this week after concluding a very successful hosting of the SEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the Sam Bailey Track & Field Complex this past weekend. Dan Waters' men's and women's teams posted their best finishes in years. Quanesha Burks captured her second consecutive SEC long jump championship with a winning jump that is the best in the country this season and our men's discus athletes finished 1-2-3-5 in the event, sweeping the medals for the first time in school history. The teams will return to action May 26-28 at the NCAA Regional Championships in Jacksonville, Fla., where our athletes will be competing to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships June 8-11 in Eugene, Ore.
