Alabama Rowing Advances Three to Big 12 Championship Grand Finals

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. -- Alabama rowing began action at the 2016 Big 12 Championships Saturday afternoon on Melton Hill Lake, qualifying three boats to Sunday Grand Finals.
Alabama's First and Second Varsity 4+ along with its Third Varsity 8+ all earned top-three finishes in their heats, which places them in Grand Final races on Sunday. The Tide's 3V8+ placed second in its heat and second overall in today's preliminary round, crossing the line in 6:48.549 as one of just four teams to finish in under seven minutes. The 1V4+ finished second in its heat and third overall in 7:21.303 and the 2V4+ followed suit in the next race with a time of 7:33.245.
The First and Second Varsity 8+ crews will compete in Petite Final races on Sunday after fourth-place finishes on Saturday with times of 6:47.365 and 6:59.655, respectively. In the final race of the day, Alabama placed second in an exhibition Third Varsity 4+ race against Texas and Kansas with a time of 7:35.488.
Day two of competition at the Big 12 Championships begins at 8 a.m. CT with the 3V8+ and culminates with the 1V8+ grand final at 10:15 a.m. and the award ceremony shortly thereafter.
