TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Standout freshman Cobie Vance left the military base and his hometown of Fayetteville, N.C., to join the Alabama Crimson Tide this season. Cobie had always dreamed of following in the footsteps of his father, U.S. Army Sergeant Major Philip Vance, a former collegiate baseball player at Bethune-Cookman, and now at Alabama, the freshman has the chance to do so.
Because of his father's military service, Cobie was able to receive the Yellow Ribbon Scholarship, allowing the Tide infielder to join the 2015-16 Crimson Tide baseball program just 72 hours after meeting head coach Mitch Gaspard.
Sgt. Maj. Vance had the opportunity to see his son play collegiately for the first time on opening weekend against Maryland, where Cobie led the team with a .500 average that included six hits, a double, one home run, two RBI, one run scored and a stolen base. Ever since that first series, Philip has made an effort to watch his son play at every game this season.
As one of only two players to start every contest in 2016, Cobie has been an integral part to Alabama's success. The freshman ranks second on the team in hits and average and is third in walks. Watch here for more on the second baseman's journey to Tuscaloosa and the bond between him and his father.
