Alabama Men's Golf Vaults into First Place After 36 Holes at Linger Longer Invitational

GREENSBORO, Ga. - The seventh-ranked Alabama men's golf team carded the low round of the day at 3-under par 285 to vault into first place after 36 holes of play at the 2016 Linger Longer Invitational. The Crimson Tide boasts a team total of 9-under par 567 (282-285) heading into the final round of action on Tuesday.
The Tide was the only squad in the 13-team field to finish under par during the second round of play. Alabama will enter the final 18 holes with a three-stroke lead over No. 22 Virginia (570). Augusta State (572), ranked No. 47 in the nation, is in third, while tournament host Kennesaw State (577) and No. 3 Georgia (579) round out the top five.
Alabama came into this week's event having won three of the last four tournaments it has played dating back to the fall season and is eyeing its fourth Linger Longer team title in the last six years.
Leading the way for the Tide was senior Tom Lovelady, who collected four birdies and a pair of bogeys on Monday, including a bogey-free back nine, on his way to recording his second consecutive round of 70. The Mountain Brook, Ala., native will come into the third and final round of play in a tie for sixth overall with a two-day total of 4-under par 140 (70-70).
Meanwhile, freshman Davis Riley continued his consistent play, carding a 1-under par 71 on Monday and is in a tie for ninth position overall with a two-day total of 3-under par 141 (70-71).
Junior Robby Shelton struggled on the front nine for the second consecutive round, but once again was able to rebound on his back nine to finish at even par 72 for the day. Shelton, who has combined to shoot 4-over par on the front nine but is 6-under on the back nine, is in 11th overall with a 2-under 142 (70-72)
Junior Dru Love also shot even par on Monday and is in a tie for 33rd overall with a 36-hole total of 4-over par 148 (76-72) on the par-72, 7,073-yard Great Waters Golf Club at Reynolds Lake Oconee course. Sophomore Jonathan Hardee rounds out the Tide in 53rd position overall with a 152 (72-80).
Sophomore Tyler Hitchner, who is competing this week as an individual this week, is in a tie for 24th with a 146 (70-76).
