FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Alabama women's tennis team (4-9, 0-5 Southeastern Conference) came up short in doubles and was unable to rally in singles action, falling 4-3 to the Arkansas Razorbacks (9-6, 2-2 SEC) on Friday.
The Crimson Tide fell behind 1-0 after doubles as Arkansas claimed courts two and three. At the third spot, the Razorbacks duo of Mia Jurasic and Ana Oparenovic defeated juniors Danielle Spielmann and Joanna Nena Savva 6-1. Alabama responded on court one, as the 32nd-ranked tandem of freshman Andie Daniell and junior Erin Routliffe held off Flavia Araujo and Makenzie Craft 6-4.
That turned the focus to the second position, where sophomore Aryn Greene and senior Natalia Maynetto were locked in a tight battle with 64th-ranked Shannon Hudson and Yuliya Lysa. Greene and Maynetto were ahead 5-4 before the Arkansas pair won the final three games for a 7-5 victory and the doubles point.
Craft pushed the Razorbacks lead to 2-0 by winning 6-1, 6-2 at the fourth spot over Savva, but Routliffe got the Tide on the board after taking down Lysa 7-5, 6-0 on court one, her first match in SEC play in the top singles spot. She is now 5-0 against conference opponents this spring.
Mia Jurasic gave Arkansas its third point of the afternoon thanks to her 6-3, 6-2 decision over Greene on court six. Oparenovic sealed the victory for Arkansas with a tight 7-6(5), 7-5 victory at the second spot over 31st-ranked Daniell.
Alabama took the final two singles courts on the day. Maynetto recorded a 6-3, 7-6(3) triumph on court three over Hudson while Spielmann came from a set down to win 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 on court five against Sasha Shkorupeieva
The Tide now heads to Columbia, Mo., for a matchup with the Missouri Tigers on Sunday, March 20 at 10 a.m. CT.
