TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama senior Krystal Rivers was honored by the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA) Thursday as a Second Team Academic All-American.
Rivers joins former teammate Sierra Wilson (2012-15) as the only two-time Academic All-America winners in Alabama volleyball history, previously earning third-team honors as a sophomore in 2014. She is one of nine repeat honorees among this year's list of 18 and is one of just two from the Southeastern Conference. Rivers owns a 3.65 cumulative GPA and is pursuing a second undergraduate degree in Spanish after already earning a biology degree.
This season Rivers was named the SEC Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the first for the program since the inaugural award was given to the Crimson Tide's Erin Price in 2003. On the court, Rivers was named the 2016 SEC Player of the Year, leading the league in kills (705) and points (803.5). She is the first player in conference history to win the Player of the Year and Scholar-Athlete of the Year award in the same season. She ended her Alabama career as the program's all-time leader in kills, moving into first place in the final week of the regular season before finishing with 2,148. She also is the career leader in points (2,506.0) and ranks among the top five in seven other categories. Rivers has already earned AVCA All-South Region honors this season, putting her in contention to earn AVCA All-America honors, which will be voted on and announced towards the conclusion of the NCAA tournament.
