Crimson Tide has now limited its opponents to 10 points or fewer in 11 of 24 quarters this season
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Juniors Quanetria Bolton and Meoshonti Knight chipped in 18 points each in Alabama's 93-43 victory over Alcorn State Thursday night at Coleman Coliseum. With the win, the Crimson Tide moves to 6-0 on the season, while the loss drops the Lady Braves to 0-7.
"It's good to be able to have another opportunity to improve and grow and get better," said Alabama head coach Kristy Curry. "I thought as the game went, we continued to try to improve and grow. We had some good minutes there down the stretch and some great opportunities for us tonight to get better."
Knight, who scored 12 of her 18 points from the free throw line, and Bolton were joined in double figures by fellow junior Hannah Cook, who added 13 points. Sophomore Shaquera Wade just missed a double-double finishing with a game-high 10 rebounds and nine points, while freshman Ashley Knight recorded a season-high tying four blocks.
For the visitors, senior Brianna Luton had team highs of 11 points and four rebounds.
It was a slow start for both Alabama and Alcorn State, however the Tide would pick up its offense and outscore the Lady Braves 14-4 over the final 6:23 in the frame to lead 19-9 at the end of the first. Alabama then outscored Alcorn State 21-7 in the second quarter, 10 of which came from Bolton, to lead 40-16 at halftime.
Cook knocked down back-to-back three pointers to start the third and spark the Tide's 20-point quarter giving Alabama a 60-27 lead heading into the final frame. The Tide put up the most points it has in a quarter all season over the last 10:00, scoring 33 points while allowing only 16. Eight different players contributed to the scoring in the fourth, led by Meoshonti Knight with eight.
For the game, Alabama was 53.4 percent (31-58) from the floor, while Alcorn State finished at 27.4 percent (17-62) total. The Tide took 37 free throws compared to only four for the Lady Braves, all of which came in the fourth quarter. Alabama also outrebounded Alcorn State, 53-25, and scored 37 points off 27 Lady Brave turnovers.
"We will continue to focus on some improvement areas and little things," added Curry. "We'll come back and go to work in the morning, and we're excited about the opportunity on Sunday."
Next up, Alabama hosts Kansas as part of the 2016 SEC/Big 12 Challenge on Sunday, Dec. 4, in Coleman Coliseum. Tip is slated for 11 a.m. CT on the SEC Network.
