Alabama limited its second opponent this season to under 10 points in the first half
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Sophomore Shaquera Wade notched career highs of 22 points and seven steals, while freshman Ashley Knight recorded the first double-double of her career with 19 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Alabama women's basketball team in its 97-29 victory over Alabama A&M Sunday in Coleman Coliseum. The win lifts the Crimson Tide to 5-0 on the season, while the loss drops the Lady Bulldogs to 1-4 overall.
"I really liked our energy and our approach to the game," said Alabama head coach Kristy Curry. "We came out early and established ourselves and kind of never let up there for a little while. I like the approach we had to start the game, and I loved our approach in the third quarter after the half. I thought our bench play was really productive, so a great overall effort and approach to the game. We went about it in a business-like fashion, and that's how we've got to be to be better."
Joining Wade and Knight in double figures were juniors Quanetria Bolton and Meoshonti Knight, who added 12 points and 10 points, respectively. Meoshonti Knight also chipped in seven rebounds, four steals and three assists. For the Lady Bulldogs, freshman Jameica Cobb led the way with 11 points and seven boards.
Alabama scored the first 16 points of the game before Alabama A&M's Cobb connected on a layup five minutes in. The Tide continued to distance itself from the Lady Bulldogs and took a 55-9 lead in at the half, marking the second time this season Alabama has held its opponent under 10 in the opening half.
The Tide went on to lead by as many as 73 in the game.
As a team, Alabama hit 58.0 percent (40-69) of its attempts, while Alabama A&M went 24.5 percent (12-49) from the floor. The Tide outrebounded the Lady Bulldogs, 47-29, and scored 44 points off 32 Alabama A&M turnovers.
Alabama got a big boost from its bench in the game as it accounted for 46 points and 23 rebounds.
Next up, the Tide hosts Alcorn State on Thursday, Dec. 1. Opening tip is slated for 7 p.m. CT in Coleman Coliseum.
