ATLANTA, Ga. – The Alabama swimming and diving team is set for a highly-competitive weekend at the Georgia Tech Invitational this Thursday-Saturday at the McAuley Aquatic Center on the Yellow Jacket's campus.
It will be familiar territory for Alabama's veterans who not only competed at this meet a year ago with great success, but also sent contingents to the men's and women's 2016 NCAA Championships, which were both held at McAuley.
The Crimson Tide has been working toward this meet throughout the fall as the semester's top competition. The swimmers in particular will be looking for fast times in pursuit of NCAA standards.
"I'm expecting a little bit of a mixed bag from our swimmers because they're in different places when it comes to their preparation," UA head coach Dennis Pursley said. "Some groups are a little more rested and will likely swim a little closer to their personal-best times. For everyone, it theoretically should be our fastest meet to date. Based on a variety of factors, I'm expecting to see some good swimming."
There will be some stout competition in Atlanta, including Southeastern Conference stalwarts Florida, Auburn, South Carolina and Arkansas, as well as host school Georgia Tech.
It has already been a fast fall for Alabama with several swimmers ranked in the top-25 nationally over a host of events. The Tide men are led by sophomore Laurent Bams, who is in the top 12 nationally in the 100 and 200 freestyle, and senior Connor Oslin, who is in the top 10 in the 100 backstroke. The women are led by junior Mia Nonnenberg who is ranked in the top 20 in both the 1,000 freestyle and 400 individual medley.
The meet gets underway each day at 9 a.m. CT with prelims, while finals begin each afternoon at 4:30 p.m. CT.
