CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Alabama rowing won all five of its races Saturday at the Chattanooga Head Race, ultimately finishing with eight top-three finishes in its opening race of the fall season.
Strong winds on the Tennessee River forced the race officials to shorten the course, but the Crimson Tide adjusted to the adverse conditions and came away with wins in all five of the races it competed in.
"Our team adapted well and it is the first time we won all five races we entered," UA head coach Larry Davis said. "They had some good performances despite the weather conditions. We're looking forward to polishing a few things and improving before we go to the Head of the Charles."
In the first race of the day, the Tide finished back-to-back in first and second place in the Women's Collegiate 8+ with times of 7:59.9 and 8:00.8, respectively. Alabama followed with winning performances in both the pairs and doubles races, as Abby Wohler and Maggie Gillespie crossed the line in 9:49.9 in the pairs and Jennifer Parker and Abby Marks teamed up for a 9:46.0 finish in the doubles. Alabama's double crew of Kylie Diffley and Dani Mazer also medaled in the event, placing second in 10:19.9.
The Tide's lone entry in the Novice 8+ posted the team's fourth winning time of the day, crossing the line in 8:55.7, over a minute ahead of the second-place boat. In the final race of the day for Alabama, the team took two of the top three spots in the Varsity 4+ including a winning time of 8:57.8 and a third-place finish of 9:49.2.
Next up, Alabama will head to Cambridge, Mass. on Oct. 22-23 for the Head of the Charles before returning to Chattanooga for the Head of the Hooch on Nov. 5-6.
