Alabama Soccer Defeats Vanderbilt, 2-0, Thursday Night in Regular Season Finale

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Sophomore Abbie Boswell and freshman Taylor Hubbard tallied goals to help lift the Alabama soccer team to a 2-0 victory over the Vanderbilt Commodores on Thursday night to conclude the 2016 regular season. The Crimson Tide improves to an overall 9-7-2 record including a 4-5-2 mark in Southeastern Conference play.
The win marks the ninth of the season, which is ties for 10th on Alabama's single season wins list.
With the win, Alabama finishes in ninth place in the league standings. Moreover, the Tide will square off against Texas A&M on Monday at 6 p.m. CT at the Orange Beach Sportsplex in Orange Beach, Ala., as part first round of the SEC Tournament. Additionally, the winner of that match will take on South Carolina on Wednesday at 5 p.m. CT. All of the matches in the tournament will broadcast on the SEC Network.
Both teams battled hard in the first half but neither was able to convert. In the 15th minute, sophomore Emma Welch recorded Alabama's first shot of the match but the Vanderbilt goalkeeper was able to make a play on the ball. In the 35th minute the Tide recorded three shots, as senior Auburn Mercer, sophomore Tori Gann and Boswell took attempts but were unable to find the back of the net. Alabama had four shots and two corner kicks in the half, while junior goalkeeper Kat Stratton collected two saves between the posts.
The Tide's offensive attack came early in the second half, as Boswell was able to find the back of the net in the 47th minute from about six yards out off a throw in pass from freshman Nealy Martin to give Alabama a 1-0 lead. Alabama recorded two more shots in the half, before Hubbard converted from the top of the box off a beautiful find from Gann at the 81:47 minute mark to extend the lead to 2-0. Vanderbilt went on to register four more shots in the half, but it wasn't enough as Hubbard's goal resulted in the final score. The Tide tallied four shots and one corner kick in the half, while Stratton picked up two more saves.
Alabama registered eight shots, four shots on goal and three corner kicks in the 90 minute affair. Stratton collected four saves in the match, and her overall record between the posts improves to 9-7-2 including a 4-5-2 mark in league play.
