Alabama Soccer Falls to No. 20 Florida, 6-0, Thursday Night

GAINESVILLE, Fla. –The Alabama soccer team lost to the No. 20 Florida Gators in a 6-0 decision Thursday night at the Donald R. Dizney Stadium in Gainesville, Fla. The Crimson Tide falls to an overall 8-7-1 record including a 3-5-1 mark in Southeastern Conference play, while the Gators improve to 11-4 and 6-3 in league play.
The first half was a very aggressive possession battle for the first ten minutes as there was only one shot taken, which came from Florida. In the 13th minute, the Gators' Savannah Jordan converted from eight yards out off a pass from Mayra Pelayo to take a 1-0 lead. Florida would strike again at the 35:30 minute mark, when Melanie Monteagudo found the back of the net on a header from three yards out to extend the Gators lead to 2-0. In the final ten minutes of the first half both teams were unable to convert, and the Gators took a 2-0 lead going into intermission. The Tide took one corner kick in the half, and junior goalkeeper Kat Stratton collected three saves between the posts.
Florida's offensive rhythm continued in the second half, as Meggie Dougherty Howard drilled the back of the net in the 66th minute to lengthen the Gators lead to 3-0. The offensive momentum continued for Florida, as Brooke Sharp converted from three yards out at the 71:13 minute mark to take a 4-0 lead. The Gators scored again in the 71st minute, as Pamela Begic found the back of the net from 15 yards out. At the 74:41 minute mark, Florida's Kit Loferski scored from 10 yards out, which resulted in the final score, 6-0. Stratton tallied four saves between the posts in the half.
Stratton ended up with seven saves in the 90 minute contest, and her overall record between the posts falls to 8-7-1 including a 3-5-1 mark in conference play.
The Tide will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 23, when it travels to Baton Rouge, La., to battle the LSU Tigers in a contest that is set to start at 1:00 p.m. CT.
