AUBURN, Ala. – Alabama men's tennis No. 34 nationally ranked singles player in sophomore Mazen Osama tallied the Crimson Tide's lone win of the day before falling in the semifinals to conclude the 2016 ITA Southern Regional Championships for the Crimson Tide at the Yarbrough Tennis Center Sunday afternoon.
"There were a bunch of matches in a short period of time this weekend, and we showed improvement from the last tournament," said Alabama head coach George Husack.
Osama topped Tulane's Sebasatian Rey in straight sets that was decided in a tie-breaker in both frames, 7-6(3), 7-6(8). In the semifinals of the main singles draw, Constantin Schmitz of Tulane outlasted Osama in a three set thriller, 6-0, 2-6, 6-4.
The Tide's No. 26 ranked doubles pair in Osama and junior Matthew Rossouw battled Trevor Foshey and Niclaus Braun of Mississippi State in the semifinals of the doubles main draw, but the pair came up short in a 3-6, 6-3, 1-0(8) decision.
"Mazen had to pull himself up by the bootstraps today, and he was so close to prevailing," said Husack. "Tremendous effort by he and Matthew in the nightcap as well. There will be many more challenges and opportunities ahead of us and, we shall go after them head on. That's Bama."
